STORAGE STRATEGIES

Storage strategies are at the core of the data storage model. It is necessary to have a standardized procedures and processes to effectively provide an available and secure storage environment. During the concept phase of developing your solution you should define your objectives and what is necessary to meet each objective within the technical and budget constraints. Storage strategies come in many flavors and is defined by your business rules, hardware and software to name a few.

TRADITIONAL BACKUP (AKA - OVER THE NETWORK)

  • Utilizes both LAN and SAN to move data to the backup devices
  • There are typically 2 methods to the traditional backup strategy
    • Method one includes using an application server to move data to a specialized server called the "Master" where the data processed for storage.
    • Method two is an expansion of method one but introduces a media server to backup media at the direction of the "Master".

PRIORITIZING DATA

  • Most data is business / organization specific.
  • It may be necessary to make changes to the evironment to accomodate the prioritization strategy.
  • Trade-offs between expense and data are typically weighed.

TESTING THE RESTORE SCENARIOS

When developing restore plan the following items should be taken into consideration:

  • Developing protocols and procedures
  • Automating processes
  • Cross training employees in the event Disaster and Recovery needs to be implemented
